No Bedmaking This Year

Due to a flurry of construction activity in/around the PSU dorms, we will not be making beds for the athletes this year.  We hope that any volunteers that usually help or planned to help make beds will consider volunteering during the games.  Just click on the "Get Involved" link above for more information and to register.

Fans in the Stands!

This year we are introducing a new volunteer category called Fans in the Stands.

If you are new to Special Olympics and do not yet desire to, or are uncomfortable with, opportunities that involve direct interaction with our athletes, we have a role for you!  Volunteers in this role help to cheer our athletes on during competitions by making signs (at our Volunteer Tent), clapping, whistling, and making up positive chants. Our “Fans in the Stands” program is a great opportunity to get involved and watch the inspiring sportsmanship of Special Olympics athletes in action… which may inspire you to get even more involved next year.

Approximate Volunteers Needed: 20 – 50 volunteers per time slot per day

The Lives We Impact

A Yale University study released in June 1995 confirmed what everyone associated with Special Olympics has been saying all along: Special Olympics measurably enhances the lives of those who participate.  The results of the study suggest that Special Olympics has a direct and positive effect on the self-image of participating athletes and their ability to function in a social setting.

According to the study, Special Olympics athletes perform better at school, at work, and at home the longer they participate in the program. The study measured such social competency skills as the ability to live independently, hold a job, participate in community activities, and develop close friendships.

Although there are no known studies as to the benefits to the Volunteers, we like to use the "smile and return index (SRI)".  Every year over 99.9999% of our volunteers leave with a smile and return the following year.

It’s important to us to be as clear about what we do as the water we provide communities in need. This list details a majority of our recent initiatives that we need your participation in.
